Air India Express, a premier low-cost airline is a subsidiary of the national carrier Air India. With its headquarters in Kochi and engineering center in Thiruvananthapuram, the airline was started to cater to the Malayalee expatriate communities in the Middle East. Though the airline was established in the beginning of May 2004, it began its operations only from April 2005. Its first international flight was from Thiruvananthapuram to Abu Dhabi.
